LARGEMOUTH BASS 1

Largemouth Bass

2013 Update - I had a blast last year trolling with Jointed Shad Raps at 15 feet.  I covered the entire small lake and with my sonar and GPS mapped out a track that kept me around 15 ft.  What is so much fun is that you must set the drag light as when a largemouth hits it hits hard.  The sound of a screaming drag is so much fun.   Try it definitely a different way to catch these fish.

The Largemouth Bass is probably the most popular freshwater fish in the US and exists in New Hampshire quite readily.  They inhabit the lakes, rivers and ponds with Smallmouth Bass.   They also excel as much warmer ponds where Smallmouth Bass do not.  It is in these ponds where there is excellent action for Largemouth for the novice angler.   In large lakes that have a circuit of semiprofessional Largemouth Bass fisherman, look for the weigh-in points for activity levels as Largemouth Bass get displaced during tournaments although they are kept alive nicely.

The experienced angler can catch Largemouth Bass following the tips you see on television and using the thousands of different products.     Largemouth Bass as super aggressive and will take many different types of baits, especially big ones.  Fishing with large salt impregnated stick baits, frogs, and long worms can be phenomenal.  Even more phenomenal to the Largemouth Bass fisherman is the action of casting all day as Largemouth are usually territorial and spread out requiring a boat working shoreline and structure.   With all this casting, one needs a good bait casting reel and this is where technology and machinery fuse into professional upwards of $500 fishing reels.  Even bait casting reels over $50 are quite sensational compared to years past and if you have never tried one, we highly suggest it.   Although it takes skill and consistently, it makes casting and working the line fun with no twists.

The Largemouth Bass will jump several times, but after a few jumps, the stamina is much diminished, unlike a Smallmouth Bass.  For this reason, once you get past the big mouth, the bite, the hook set, and a few jumps, there is nothing left but to get it into the boat quickly and released.   One problem that occurs is that professional bass boats with working live wells can now port fish to and from locations like never before.   This results is significant fish displacement.  There are some excellent Largemouth Bass ponds that do not allow large motor boats.  These would be an excellent place to experience the thrill of Largemouth Bass fishing.
